If you have traveled by airways, you would know that Airports provide you free Wi-Fi service. All you have to do is connect to the free Wi-Fi, use your mobile number to get the PIN code to access free Wi-Fi and you are done.
Now, you will be able to access free Wi-Fi at Mumbai Central – the first Indian Railway station to get a free Wi-Fi hotspot – this all is courtesy Google. When Sundar Pichai was in India some time back, he had promised to provide free Wi-fi at 400 railway stations. Keeping his promise, the first railway station has been launched.
Google India’s official blog said –
“So, if you’re one of the 100,000 people who’ll pass through Mumbai Central today, go ahead, stream the video below in HD to learn more. After that, how about sending those last minute work emails, downloading a new game or offlining a few YouTube videos to keep the kids, and yourself, entertained on the journey ahead.”
Google has tied up with Indian Railways and RailTel to provide this free service. RailTel is a PSU Telecom company, independent of DoT, which was created to make the achieve requirements of Indian Railways without being dependent on other companies, such as BSNL or MTNL.
Though Mumbai Central has been the first railway station to get free Wi-Fi, Google plans to bring 100 railway stations online by the end of 2016. Google also reported that Allahbad, Jaipur, Patna and Ranchi are the next stations to get the Free Wi-fi.

- Open a web browser on your device and go to this URL – railwire.co.in
- A page will open up and will ask you for your mobile number. Enter your mobile number and proceed. This step is important as you will receive a PIN to access internet on this number as an SMS
- When you receive a 4-digit PIN number, use that in the same webpage that you had opened. Once you proceed, you will see a confirmation screen and you will then be connected to free Wi-Fi.
What all I can use this free Wi-Fi for?
Google or RailTel has not come out with specific items that you can use this free Wi-Fi for, but Google has candidly mentioned that you can ‘stream HD videos or download games’. What this can mean is – the Wi-Fi will be high-speed Otherwise it will not be possible to stream an HD video without hiccups. Also, as hinted by Google, this high speed internet will be ‘high-speed’ only for the first hour. Post that the speed will go down.
